The Hyperion's Flight Deck, or Main Hanger, is located at the rear of the ship. To make room for the fighter squadron, the Hyperion's main shuttle bay was converted into the Hanger.
Hyperion
Class Fighters
The Hyperion Class Fighter is the most highly advanced piece of equipment in the Star Fleet inventory. It is equipped with the latest in micro-designed components. Even with the extensive miniaturization there is barely room for the pilot in this mobile weapons platform. The Hyperion Class Fighter was designed with two roles in mind: Space superiority fighter and anti-ship assault. The Hyperion fighter's greatest asset is it's high speed and maneuverability at both warp and impulse speeds. It's relatively small size makes it an extremely difficult target to hit. Against fleet size vessels the fighter is designed to fight in close to the hull, where a ship's defensive weaponry has the most difficulty. A minor drawback is a lack of tractor beams or transporters. In an emergency pilots are required to eject directly from the cockpit and therefore must wear special flightsuits designed specificly for use with the Hyperion Class Fighter. The helmet of the flightsuit includes a heads-up display (HUD) fitted into the transparent face shield that, when activated, gives the pilot a tactical readout of the battlefield, a targeting vector for the pulse phasers, and a lock-on status display for the torpedo targeting system.
The Hyperion Class Fighter is a direct development of the previous Kingston Class design, which was itself designed to tackle other space fighters and for anti-ship strikes. The Kingston Class is closely linked to the Excalibur Class Starships which formed Starfleet's first true fighter carriers during the Dominion war. When first deployed, it was found that the Kingstons were superb combat craft, but lacked endurance and could be out maneuvered due to their limited sensor capabilities. Starfleet decided to remedy this by placing the Kingston's on a carrier Starship, which could move them directly to the scene of battle and keep them updated with detailed sensor sweeps. The prototype of this system was the USS Hyperion-C, the first Excalibur Class starship which was equipped with two squadrons of Kingston fighters.
During the Dominion war the Kingstons proved themselves over and over again as more than a match for any single ship type and as a group were able to stand toe to toe with a wing of Dominion fighters. The Hyperion Class is an update to the Kingston design, named in honor of the first Excalibur Class carrier, the USS Hyperion. The upgrade features a new warp nacelle design, able to offer increased speed over longer distances. The weapons system has been altered to fit micro-torpedo launchers to complement the existing Phasers and Quantum torpedoes. Also the Hyperions are now fitted with the latest model pilot ejection system. Should the fighter be hit, the pilot is sealed into his S-Suit and blasted clear of the damaged craft. In his suit, the pilot can survive in space for around 3 hours before rescue and an emergency beacon will activate automatically when the pilot ejects.
However, the design still suffers from a lack of range, especially when using the higher warp facts, since fuel will disappear quickly. The sensor systems of the fighters remains limited, although the uplink to the carriers' computer has been improved. The new warp nacelle design is also relatively unstable when pushed beyond Warp 8.9.

Luna Squadron:
The USS Hyperion NCC-7438-D
carries one squadron of twelve Hyperion Class fighters in her main hanger.
These fighters
operate as a single
group, but can also be broken down into three smaller sections of four
fighters per section. Each section
can be further sub-divided
into two fingers of two fighters, a leader and wingman. This gives the
squadron great flexibility
and allows the Commanding
Officer to disperse his pilots, whilst still remaining an effective fighting
unit.
Luna Squadron was
first formed as a unit when the Hyperion-C was commissioned in 2375. Then
the squadron consisted of
10 Kingston Class
fighters and operated in concert with the Marine staffed Halo Squadron.
Luna squadron specialized in
space combat, while
the Halo pilots concentrated on ground attack. However, on the new USS
Hyperion, Luna squadron has
been adapted into
a true multi-role outfit of 12 fighters, able to deal with any mission
that may arise.
Captain's Yacht: USS Elara
As with all Vincent Class Starships the USS Hyperion-D has a Captain's Yacht, based on the model first designed for the Sovereign Class starships. Unlike earlier ships of this type, such as the Galaxy Class Captain's Yacht, this model is equipped with a modern warp drive system as well as armaments and defenses.
The Yacht is stored on the underside of the Primary hull, locked to the saucer section. Here it forms an integrated part of the ships hull, with its nacelles tucked away and all systems powered down. When deployed, the Yacht is first powered up and then detaches from the hull, at a safe distance the nacelles are deployed and the ship is ready for warp. The Hyperion herself will increase power to the structural integrity field when the Yacht is missing to cover the gap left in the hull.
The Yacht is used for whatever the Captain wishes, but most often serves as a diplomatic curiour when sending a shuttle or runabout might be considered an insult.
