Though the Hyperion is an extremely capable warship, she is also a ship of discovery.  Her Science Department is equipped with several laboratories as well as all the latest technology.  When passing by uncharted systems, probes can be launched to collect data for further analysis.  Science is also vital in performing the Hyperion's various missions.  They can analyze debris from destroyed vessels, determine the composition of asteroids that may be interfering with sensors, and a variety of other various roles.

The Science department also maintains an arboretum on the Hyperion.  This is a beautiful garden where the crew can come to relax and converse while off duty.

Science is also equipped with an Astrometrics lab which can create highly detailed 3-D re-creations of stellar phenomenon.

The Science depatment consists of around 12 men including 3 officers.  The Chief Science Officer is Lt. (JG) Numtakaen.

The Medical Department is responsible for the health of the Hyperion's Crew.  They are also tasked with watching for contagions and making sure all officers are in good enough mental health to perform their duties.  Using tricorders, scanners, dermal regenerators, cortical stimulants, and other various equipment, the Medical department is capable of mending broken bones, healing cuts, curing insomnia, etc.

The Medical Department consists of around 25 members including 7 officers.  The chief Medical Officer is Lt. Thomas O'Halloran.  The Ship's Counselor is Lt. Commander Seriva Damu.

     A word from our Doctor,

Hello there,

I am Thomas Andrew O'Halloran, MD and I am the current Chief Medical Officer of the USS Hyperion.  On behalf of the ACMO, Senior Nurse, the medical staff, and even our EMH Mindy, I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Sickbay of the Hyperion.

Having been involved with Starfleet for a significant portion of my medical career, I understand the natural aversion that most personnel have towards visit to the sickbay.  It is rare that someone drops by to simply grab a cup of Earl Grey tea or talk about the latest Paressi Squares match results.  More commonly, people drop by because they are ill or injured.  Indeed it has been argued that our very presence on a Starship is a reminder of the dangers inherent in our profession of exploration and defense.  However, it for those very reasons that a well staffed Sickbay with a superlative staff is essential to the smooth operation of a Starship, not only in times of crisis, but in the quiet doldrums of time that pass between patrols or missions.

To that end then Dr. Hannah McManus, Captain Nathan Starr, and I have worked very hard to assemble the facilities and staff that are, in my opinion, second to none in the fleet.  The facilities are as modern as any you'd find on a starbase, if somewhat of a microcosm of a starbase medical facility.  The men and women who serve in this department have dedicated the bulk of their lives to the care of patients and we are very lucky to have them here.  We truly have a staff that is not only gifted academically, but also blessed with the tempering of experience.

To those of you who are considering an assignment to the Hyperion, I can only tell you that we are a family of practitioners here who support each other to the betterment of our patients.  It is a collaborative environment, that while not always Walden, is close knit and collegial.  Should you choose to join us, I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you in the near future.  If you are passing through, I hope that you enjoy your tour of the Hyperion and that you have the best of luck during your tenure in Tango Fleet.

Sincerely Yours,

Thomas A. O'Halloran, MD
